Today is International Women’s Day, and we wanted to use this occasion to acknowledge the incredible contributions of women to the film and television industry. Their passion, talent, and determination have paved the way for future generations of female storytellers. Here are our top influential women who have left an indelible mark on the film and TV world:
Kathryn Bigelow: As the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director for “The Hurt Locker” (2008), Bigelow overcame barriers and proved that gender is no limitation to success in the director’s chair.
Shonda Rhimes: Rhimes has created groundbreaking series like “Grey’s Anatomy” (2005), “Scandal” (2012-2018), and “How to Get Away with Murder” (2014-2020), offering narratives that resonate with audiences worldwide.
Ava DuVernay: Through her powerful storytelling and commitment to amplifying marginalised voices, DuVernay has become a force for change in Hollywood. From “Selma” (2014) to “13th” (2016) and “When They See Us” (2019), her work sparks conversations and drives social impact.
Mindy Kaling: As an actress, writer, and producer, Kaling has defied stereotypes and championed diversity both on-screen and behind the scenes. Her hit show “The Mindy Project” (2013-2017) broke barriers and inspired countless aspiring creators.
Greta Gerwig: Gerwig’s films, such as “Lady Bird” (2017), “Little Women” (2019), and “The Barbie Movie” (2023), have captured the essence of womanhood and rewritten the rules of storytelling, earning widespread acclaim and admiration.
Let’s celebrate the remarkable women who continue to shape the film and television industry with their talent, resilience, and unwavering dedication.
